What do foreigners need to get married in Switzerland?
If you are visiting Switzerland on a tourist visa, you cannot get legally married in the country. In order for your vows in Switzerland to be legally binding, you would have to be a Swiss national or have a residency permit. However, that’s not to say that you cannot still consider eloping in Switzerland! There are two available options. The first is to host your legally binding marriage ceremony prior to heading to Switzerland to elope. The second is to host your legally binding wedding vows upon your return.
How much does it cost to get married in Switzerland?
The average cost of your Switzerland elopement will depend on a few factors, such as:
- Flights
- Accomodatons
- Attire
- Wedding Photography
- Activities & Adventures
As you can imagine, each of these elements will vary greatly while providing you with the flexibility of making your elopement as simple or as intricate as you’d like! However, at the bottom of this post, I’ve included further details on Switzerland elopement packages.

Traveling to Switzerland from Canada
Currently, Canadian citizens are not required to have a visa to visit Switzerland. This is because Canada is a country whose citizens are currently visa-exempt. This policy allows Canadians to travel to Switzerland for up to 90 days per 185-day period when visiting for tourism. However, beginning in 2026, Canadians will need to register online with the ETIAS Switzerland platform for stays of the same length, so please keep this in mind when eloping in Switzerland beginning in 2026 or later.
There are several Canadian airports that provide direct and indirect service to Switzerland.
- Montréal (YUL) to Zurich Switzerland (ZRH)
- Montréal (YUL) to Geneva Switzerland (GVA)
- Toronto (YYZ) to Zurich Switzerland (ZRH)
- Toronto (YYZ) to Geneva Switzerland (GVA)
- Calgary (YYC) to Zurich Switzerland (ZRH)
- Calgary (YYC) to Geneva Switzerland (GVA)
- Vancouver (YVR) to Zurich Switzerland (ZRH)
- Vancouver (YVR) to Geneva Switzerland (GVA)
- Ottawa, Ontario (YOW) to Geneva Switzerland (GVA)
- Ottawa, Ontario (YOW )to Zurich Switzerland (ZRH)
- Québec (YQB) to Geneva Switzerland (GVA)
Should We Fly Into Geneva Or Zurich?
Genneva is considered to be a big & busy airport in Switzerland. This is largely because the airport sits right on the Swiss-French border. Additionally, the airport provides easy access. You can easily get to and from the Geneva airport through the local bus service or by renting a car.
Zurich is by far the largest airport in Switzerland. It is the main hub for Swiss Air and provides services to 194 destinations across 69 countries. Zurich is only 10 minutes from the center of the city and can be easily accessed via car or train. Additionally, there are many direct trains from Zurich Airport that lead to other parts of the country, making it the most easily accessible airport for travel to mountain resorts and cities.

What Is The Best Time Of Year To Plan A Switzerland Elopement?
One of many of the many amazing aspects of eloping in Switzerland is that the country is known for its mild temperatures. There is no excessive heat or humidity or below-freezing temperatures. Of course, this is dependent upon the altitude at which you select to host your elopement. Either way, when you pack your bag for Switzerland, along side your wedding attire, you’ll want to bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and at least a raincoat or light layers. But if you’re packing for winter, your bag will look a little different!
Winter in Switzerland
November – March
Winter in Switzerland is a magical wonderland of snow. Mountain villages and ski resorts are filled with visitors who are visiting for winter sports, and evenings are spent cozied up to warm fires built inside the chaltes. Switzerland is beautiful, and there are still plenty of local activities to enjoy during winter, even if you’re not a skier. Additionally, both spring and winter in Switzerland are filled with festivals. During the winter, you can expect to encounter St Nicholas Day traditions (December 6th), Christmas celebrations, Epiphany carol singing (January 6th), New Year’s Customs (including Schulsilvester), and Shrove Tuesday traditions on full display.
Average Temperatures | During winter, you can expect Switzerland to range in temperature from -2 to 7°C (28° – 45° F)

Spring in Switzerland
April – June
The landscape in Switzerland comes to life during spring. The flowers are in full bloom, creating a bucolic setting full of vibrant colour. Additionally, spring in Switzerland is considered the ‘shoulder season,’ meaning there are fewer tourists and mild temperatures. It’s a beautiful time for eloping in Switzerland if you are hoping for a quiet getaway. Just like winter, Switzerland offers a host of local festivities during spring, including their nighttime procession that dates back to 1818. In the villages, you’ll find a host of Eierläset (egg races), which marks the “race” between the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
Average Temperatures | During Spring, you can expect Switzerland to run the same range of temperature that it does in fall, from 10° to 20°C (50° – 68° F)

Summer in Switzerland
June – September
Summer in Switzerland is glorious. You can expect long days, warm but mild temperatures, outdoor sports and activities, and visitors from around the globe. Hiking is by far one of the most popular activities throughout the summer and is perfect for nature lovers and flower seekers. During summer, the lakes in Switzerland will also be warm enough for swimming. You’ll find that most locals will be spending their time outdoors after June 1st when the summer solstice hits the northern hemisphere.
Average Temperatures | During summer, you can expect Switzerland to range in temperature from 18 to 28 °C (65° – 82° F)

Fall in Switzerland
September – November
Fall in Switzerland is tranquil and serene with the ripening of locally grown fruit and the foliage on full display. The air is crisp, and the landscapes are touched by a warm glow. The crowds during fall are at an all-time low, and tourists traveling to Switzerland can experience the comforting peace of the Swiss countryside. Overall, temperatures will be somewhat warm, but you can expect the unexpected rain shower in the afternoon as condensation levels rise.
Average Temperature | During Fall, you can expect Switzerland to range in temperature from 8 to 15 °C (46° – 59° F)

The Best Time of Year to Plan Your Switzerland Elopement
As a Switzerland elopement photographer, my philosophy is that the best time of year for eloping in Switzerland is the time that feels right to you. However, if you are in the midst of planning your elopement and still aren’t sure strictly because of weather, Switzerland’s mild seasons are May through September. The average temperatures will be mild to warm, and overall, there will be no snow on the ground.
If you want to plan a Switzerland elopement that is packed with mountain exploring adventure, then consider that the High Alps are a popular tourist destination in the summer. Largely in part because many of the resorts are open for skiing and snowboarding through June. But if you want to climb and hike, then late June through August will be your best bet.
If snow and cold temperatures sound like the excitement you are searching for, then December through early February will be your best bet. During this time, Switzerland experiences its heaviest snowfall and registers the coldest temperatures. But be mindful that the sun is in short supply, which means less time to be outdoors before nightfall, in which case a sunrise elopement will be perfect!

Things to do in Switzerland While Visiting for your Elopement & Honeymoon
Immersing yourself in the local culture and landscape is all part of the fun of eloping in Switzerland. Here are (just a few) things to do while you’re in Switzerland for your wedding.
Explore the Swiss Alps
The Swiss Alps become a playground in the winter! The area is known for its world-class ski slopes. But if you’d like to skip the slopes, you can go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing instead. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, you can enjoy the Alps by going hiking or taking a train tour to view the stunning landscape.
Visit a Cheese Factory
There are over 475 varieties of cheese that come from Switzerland, with each offering its own process for creation. If you’re super curious to learn more about cheese making during your stay, you can take a tour of one of their many cheese factories! Below are 7 cheese factories in Switzerland that currently offer tours.
- La Maison du Gruyère
- Emmental
- La Maison de la Tête de Moine
- Appenzeller
- Entlebuch
- Alp-Schaukäeserei
- Gottardo
Take a Rail Tour Through Zermatt
Zermatt is perhaps the only Swiss town that is completely car-free! But, in its place, you’ll find a series of connecting rail tours to help you explore the area. Zermatt is also home to a Michelin star restaurant, the subterranean Matterhorn Museum, countless traditional Swiss restaurants, and Monte Rosa, a belle époque hotel that first opened in the mid-nineteenth century. Enjoying Zermatt will be a leisurely day of sights, sounds, and flavors.

Marvel at the Matterhorn
If you decide to host your elopement elsewhere in Switzerland, it’s still worth penciling in a trip to the Matterhorn during your stay! The Matterhorn is dubbed the most photographed mountain in the world, and its shape inspired the design featured on the packaging of Toblerone chocolate.
Jungfrau
One of the main summits of the Bernese Alps, Jungfrau, offers everyone a little bit of adventure. If you’re an avid skier, there are three mountain ranges and two valleys. However, in the warmer months at Jungfrau, you can go zip lining, sledding, hiking, mountain carting, or take a scooter bike to explore the area. Wondering how to get to Jungfrau? From Grindelwald, take the Eiger Express, a speedy, eco-friendly, tri-cable gondola.
Explore the Lakes
Switzerland is a country full of placid, serene lakes, and taking a boat tour may be just the thing you need to give you a quick break in between planned hikes or hitting the trails. There are boat rides and cruises offered on all of the major lakes in Switzerland. I highly recommend first deciding which lake you absolutely have to see before selecting an experience that fits your budget and your itinerary.
- Lake Lucerne
- Lake Zurich
- Lake Maggiore
- Lake Zug
- Lake Brienz & Lake Thun
- Lake Geneva
- Lake Constance
- Lake Lugano
Try Local Swiss Cuisine
If you love immersing yourself in local culture while traveling, you have to taste the local flavors during your stay. You might already know that Switzerland is the land of cheese & chocolate (yum), and I highly recommend you enjoy a tour of a cheese factory during your visit. But if you want your elopement to embody a true Swiss experience, you should definitely taste a few of these dishes during your stay.

Fondue
Swiss fondue is nothing like the fondue you’ll find at local chain restaurants in North America, it’s much more decadent and flavourful. Recipes will vary depending on which part of the country you visit during your elopement, and fondue in Switzerland is commonly served with tea or white wine.
Raclette
Yes, more cheese! Raclette is kind of the sister to fondue. It is a piece of melted cheese dripped directly onto your plate, and I’m guessing you’ve seen the famed ‘raclette slide’ on TikTok or Instagram. Raclette is typically accompanied by bacon, potatoes, little onions, or pickles.
Röstis
A dish made of thinly sliced potatoes cooked in a pan with butter that forms a galette. This dish can sometimes include eggs or meat. It is delectable, filling, and a must-try!
Leckerli
A small square biscuit dessert made of gingerbread and topped with finely powdered sugar. You can typically find this dessert in the Basel area of Switzerland. These are not soft and pillowy but rather crispy, you may want to accompany your Leckerli with a warm drink of choice.
La Salée au Sucre
Also known as ‘salted sugar’. This is a sweet round bun topped with a mixture of sugar, cream, vanilla, or a beaten egg. This dish originates from Vaud, although it is enjoyed throughout the country.
Chocolate
I don’t think it’s possible to leave Switzerland without being tempted by their famous chocolate!! Swiss chocolate is of the highest quality, winning awards for its unique process: dense Alpine milk from cows raised at high altitudes. It tastes like a dream, and you will not regret picking up some Swiss chocolate before the end of your trip.
14 Best Switzerland Elopement Locations
The landscape of Switzerland is vast and offers so many unique experiences. Depending on where you stay or host your elopement, you can expect mountain views, vineyards, quaint towns, historic cathedrals, and bustling cities. Below, you’ll find 14 of the best Switzerland elopement locations that include all of these elements and so much more!

1. Dolomites
The Dolomites is a famous mountain range that lies in northeastern Italy. However, there is a lesser known area of Switzerland, the Gastlosen, which is known as the “Dolomites of Switzerland”. The Gastlosen are almost entirely vertical, reaching up towards the sky with dramatic peaks. This area is a hiker’s paradise! However, if you’re not an avid hiker but you’d like to take in the gorgeous views of the Gastlosen, you can take the express chair lift (yes, in a wedding dress!) to Bärghus Musersbergli to view the limestone rock formations.

2. Switzerland National Park
The one and only national park offered in Switzerland is full of bustling wildlife and winding hiking trails. The forest views are stunning and offer a glimpse of the local snowy peaks (depending on the time of year, of course.) Additionally, each pathway opens to a vista that provides an idyllic scenery of the nearby ridgeline. The park is easily accessible by public transportation or car. There is no admission fee for entering the park, and you can find additional information at this link, or through the visitor centre upon arrival. If you chose to elope at Switzerland National Park, there will be lots of foot traffic & tourists.

3. Matterhorn Wedding
The Matterhorn is one of the most well-known mountains in the Alps and straddles the frontier between Italy and Switzerland. If you wish to plan a Matterhorn wedding, the best way to do so would be through the town of Zermatt. The town offers mountain views from all sides, including the famed Matterhorn. To gain access, your journey to the Matterhorn will include a cable car or train up this stunning mountain location for your vows. There are several locations surrounding the Matterhorn for your Switzerland elopement photos. One of my favourites is around Lake Riffelsee. This space offers a clearing with panoramic views for stunning photos of your Switzerland elopement with breathtaking views.

4. Creux du Van
If you’re up for a hike on the day of your wedding and want to say I do by a phenomenal rock formation, I highly recommend Creux du Van. If you want to view the summit, a 14-kilometer (8.7-mile) hike will lead you to the location where you can recite your vows. Creux du Van is a natural amphitheater-like formation that was formed during the Jurassic period. If you’re not a fan of hiking but want to enjoy the natural beauty of Creux du Van, there are plenty of other less rigorous locations within the formation to host your Switzerland elopement.

5. Appenzell
Located in northeastern Switzerland, Appenzell is located at the foothills of the Alpstein mountains, not far from the borders of Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein. The town is known for its wooden houses with colourful facades and lies just 90 minutes away from Zurich.. Additionally, the town is a sort of hub for many summits, offering connections to trails and peaks via cablecars, including Säntis Peak. Nearby Appenzell, you’ll find the steep cliffs of Ebenalp, where the Wildkirchli cave complex houses a 17th-century chapel. When you picture Switzerland, do you imagine wide open green fields made for flocking? That is Appenzell! It is quintessential Switzerland, with wildflowers in bloom during May and June. Needless to say Appenzell offers a multitude of Switzerland elopement experiences.

6. St. Moritz
St. Moritz is a luxurious alpine resort town located in Switzerland’s Engadin Valley. The town has been home to the Winter Olympics twice. It is the playground of winter sports in Switzerland, including horse racing that takes place over the ice! The stunning town is nestled in the foothills of the mountains, providing idyllic views in every direction. If you’re not big on the idea of a winter elopement in Switzerland, you’ll be happy to know that St. Moritz is just as stunning when spring and summer are in full bloom.

7. Valais
Located in southern Switzerland, Valais is home to the famed Matterhorn, as well as the Rhône River Valley vineyards and several upscale Alpine resorts. The town is also the starting point for the scenic Glacier Express train. You’ll find that Valais is a ‘land of contrasts’ with mountains, valleys, glaciers, and vineyards; it provides a little something for everyone, no matter the vibe you are searching for when eloping in Switzerland.

8. Lauterbrunnen
Searching for elopement locations in the Swiss Alps? Lauterbrunnen is situated in a municipality of the Swiss Alps, set in a scenic valley with jagged cliffs, and is home to Staubbach Falls – a beautiful natural waterfall. This scenic valley offers cable car access to Stechelberg village and Schilthorn mountain, where you can catch stunning views of the Bernese Alps. The greenery in Lauterbrunnen through spring and summer is truly unforgettable, offering an idyllic setting for you to elope in Switzerland.

9. Grindelwald
One of the most popular travel destinations in Switzerland, Grindelwald lies at the foot of the Eiger, with views of the glaciers and the Jungfrau (a mountain railway station in the Alps). Grindelwald is considered to be a German-speaking Swiss town but features idyllic traditional wooden homes. Gindelwald is a hot spot destination for a gondola ride on the Männlichen to view vistas, valleys, and trails. If you want a location in Switzerland that offers flexibility when it comes to your elopement, I highly recommend Gindelwald.

10. Interlaken
Lakes, mountain villages, and the Bernese Alps, Interlaken, Switzerland offers a little bit of the best of everything! Interlaken is located in western Switzerland in the Bernese Oberland between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Like many other destinations throughout Switzerland, Interlaken is known for its access to adventurous outdoor sports and activities. One of the biggest draws to choosing Interlaken for hosting your Switzerland elopement is the local monastery. Their grand, historic monastery and castle offers Gothic cloisters and provide a stunning backdrop for your vows or wedding photos in Switzerland.

11. Gstaad
A stunning resort town in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps, Gstaad is where (literal) royalty goes to vacation! In Gstaad, you’ll find cable cars that connect to local resorts and hundreds upon hundreds of kilometers of cross-country skiing. Gstaad is dripping with Swiss charm but offers the most upscale, luxurious amenities possible for your elopement and honeymoon. Additionally, the picturesque setting located at the foothills of the Alps provides sweeping 360-degree views best enjoyed through a leisurely stroll or a variety of outdoor activities.

12. Lausanne
Stretched across the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a southwestern city in Switzerland known for its terrain and historic buildings. The town provides the feeling of laid back ‘lake leisure’ with the option of visiting nearby wine vineyards. If you are both avid lovers of history, in Lausanne, you can take a stroll by Notre Dame Cathedral, where a tower watchman has been calling the time on the hour every night for the last 600 years. Lausanne is also home to Château de Vidy (the Castle of Vidy), a magnificent 18th century castle that still stands today.

13. Zurich
Historic buildings in the old town collide with a modern metropolis, creating the stunning city of Zurich. The city’s landmark, Grossmünster church, is a popular destination for tourists to stop and take a photo. Grossmünster is a 16th-century evangelical protestant church that features neo gothic towers, and I can’t think of a better location to visit during your elopement in Zurich for gorgeous wedding photos! If you’re a big foodie, you’ll also love Zurich for its diverse range of cafes, restaurants, and bars that serve classic cuisine as well as exotic fare for the more refined palate.

14. Ticino
Known as the ‘sunniest’ region in Switzerland, Ticino’s beautiful landscape is diverse, to say the very least! In Ticino, you’ll find mountains, palm trees, and lakes, all accented by charming, quaint villages. The southern town is a popular destination if you’re looking to elope in Switzerland with an itinerary full of local excursions. Bordering Italy, Ticino is known to be a town that exudes Mediterranean flair.
