Whether you’re looking for a stunning turquoise lake or cascading mountain views as a backdrop, you can find it all in Banff National Park. Some lakes even have sandy white beaches, although the water may be a bit colder for swimming it can be a nice way to cool off during a hot summer day. You don’t even need to hike to have some incredible views, but if you’re into hiking I’d highly recommend doing a few if you can!

Have you ever wanted to go paddle boarding surrounded by towering mountains? Or maybe you want to go horseback riding through the forest to the top of a mountain. Banff offers the opportunity to do incredible activities all within close range from each other.

There’s Never a Bad Season

Experiencing Banff in the summer is completely different than in the winter and I’d highly recommend doing both if you’re able to! Being able to do back country hikes in the summer and sit outside enjoying a campfire under the millions of stars is one great reason to consider the summer. The northern lights may be more up your alley though, with snow capped trees and brisk air then winter may be more you’re thing.

A must-see in Banff, Lake Louise combines elegance and wilderness. Picture your ceremony by the emerald lake with the Victoria Glacier in the background. If you’re looking for a touch of luxury and a beautiful place to stay while you elope the nearby Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is the perfect place!

Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is an iconic spot renowned for its turquoise waters and the surrounding Valley of the Ten Peaks. Early mornings here offer tranquility, soft lighting, and fewer visitors—ideal for an intimate elopement.

It’s only accessible from June – October (dates varying dependent on weather), so the ideal time to have the crystal clear waters would be end of June – mid August.

Peyto Lake

One of the most photographed spots in Banff, Peyto Lake wows with its wolf-shaped shoreline and vibrant blue hues. A short hike to the Bow Summit lookout offers panoramic views, making it a secluded yet accessible elopement location.

Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is perfect if you’re seeking a mix of adventure and tranquility. The expansive lake, surrounded by rugged peaks, offers a variety of stunning ceremony spots. You can even take a scenic boat ride for a truly unique elopement experience!

Tunnel Mountain

All of the places listed above require a park pass to visit. These can usually be purchased at the gate or online in advance. If you’re travelling with anyone you’ll need the “family pass” as an adult pass will only cover one person in the vehicle. Day pass tickets can be purchased here, and a year park pass can be purchased here (recommended if you’re visiting any/multiple parks for more than 6 days in 1 year). The park pass will cover your entry into any and all of the parks, so if you buy a pass in Banff you can still use it in Jasper.

Best Time of the Year to Elope in Banff

Summer (June – August)

Summer in Banff is vibrant, with lush greenery, wildflowers in bloom, and glacial lakes at their most vibrant turquoise. It’s also the busiest time, so popular spots like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake can feel crowded between 9 am and 6 pm. Don’t let the crowds deter you though, it’s a great time to head into the back country and do one of the many beautiful hikes Banff National Park is famous for!

To avoid the crowds for your elopement, early mornings or evenings are perfect for an intimate ceremony, and the long daylight hours give you plenty of flexibility. Imagine exchanging vows as the sun rises, painting the peaks in golden hues, or celebrating at dusk under the glowing sky!

Fall (September – October)

Fall in Banff is brief but spectacular. The golden larch trees light up the alpine slopes, and the cooler weather keeps the crowds lighter compared to summer. Late September is the sweet spot for those golden tones.

Eloping in the fall gives you the chance to explore quieter trails and enjoy crisp mountain air without the summer rush.
