1. Start with the Big Picture: What Kind of Day Do You Want?
Every elopement day looks different because every couple is different. So the first step in building your elopement timeline is to get clear on the kind of day you want. This is where you dream big and start painting the picture of your perfect day.
Ask yourselves: What feeling do you want to soak in? Do you want the calm, unhurried pace of a slow morning filled with quiet moments and intimate reflections? Or is your heart set on an epic adventure, exploring rugged landscapes, culminating in a sunset ceremony with friends and family nearby? Maybe you envision a cozy afternoon with a simple ceremony, followed by a gourmet dinner in a charming mountain cabin.
Write down your must-haves, your nice-to-haves, and the things you’re willing to let go of. Having this clarity upfront is key because it keeps your timeline aligned with your priorities—not someone else’s expectations or trends. For example, if having a sunset ceremony is non-negotiable, then your timeline needs to be built backward from that moment.
Also, consider what’s most important to you emotionally: Is it having uninterrupted time alone? A celebratory meal? Lots of photos? (I can help you there!) This will help you decide what to allocate time for and what to keep minimal.
2. Build in Moments for Just You Two
Your elopement is about your love story. Be sure to carve out intentional time for just the two of you—away from vendors, guests, or distractions.
These quiet moments can often become the most treasured memories of your day. It might be waking up together with coffee as the sun rises, taking a slow morning hike to a secluded waterfall, or sitting quietly and holding hands while watching the stars come out after your ceremony.
Why are these moments so important? Because an elopement is more than just the ceremony and photos—it’s a day to connect deeply and celebrate your bond in a meaningful way. Without these pauses, it can feel like your day is just a checklist of activities.
If you’re working with a photographer (like me!), these intimate moments can also create some of the most genuine, heartfelt photos. The relaxed energy you share will show through, and your images will feel timeless and authentic.
3. Allow Time for Travel + Transitions
Travel and transitions take time—especially if you’re moving between ceremony spots, photo locations, or celebration venues.
It’s tempting to pack your day with back-to-back activities, but that’s a recipe for stress and missed opportunities. Be realistic about how long it will take to get from place to place, including parking, walking to scenic overlooks, or dealing with unexpected delays.
For example, if your ceremony is at a mountaintop and your reception spot is an hour away, factor in not just the driving time but also time to freshen up and settle in. Even if you’re eloping locally, consider how long it takes to move from your hair and makeup location to the ceremony site.
Add buffer time to your elopement timeline—usually 15 to 30 minutes is a good cushion. This also gives you space to relax, breathe, and savor the moment instead of rushing.
4. Don’t Forget to Eat
With all the excitement and moving around, it’s easy to forget to eat! But nourishing your body is essential so you can feel energized, relaxed, and fully present throughout your day.
Plan snacks or meals that fit your day and location. Maybe a light breakfast of fresh fruit and pastries if you’re starting early, or a picnic lunch if you’re adventuring outdoors. If you’re celebrating into the evening, make sure your dinner spot is booked and you have enough time to enjoy it without rushing.
Eating together can also be a beautiful moment of connection. Taking a pause to share a meal, clink glasses, and reflect on your day adds depth to your celebration beyond just photos and vows.
For longer days, consider packing easy-to-carry snacks like trail mix, cheese and crackers, or energy bars, especially if you’ll be hiking or in remote locations.

5. Golden Hour Magic (Why Lighting Matters)
Lighting can make or break your photos, and golden hour—the hour before sunset—is pure magic for elopements.
During golden hour, the sun is low in the sky, casting soft, warm light that flatters skin tones and adds a romantic glow. This is when your photos will look their absolute best, with beautiful natural light that feels timeless and dreamy.
If photography is a big priority for you, try to schedule your ceremony or portraits during this time. Even if you’re starting your day earlier, consider saving your couple’s portraits or first look for golden hour. It’s also a wonderful time for candid moments and intimate celebrations, with stunning natural backdrops enhanced by the light.
If your location offers amazing sunset views—think mountain ridges, oceans, or city skylines—golden hour can be the highlight of your entire day.
